island Susac

Small island of Sušac lies 23 NM south of the island of Hvar and 13 NM west of Lastovo. Its eastern side is shallow and suitable for swimming while its southern and southwestern side is very steep with high cliffs and rocks. There used to be 200 people living on Sušac, but today there is only one family taking care of the lighthouse and one sheepherder. One can also see the remains of two churches on the island. The older church dates back to the 4th century. On the cliffs of the northern side of the island nature formed a small lake that can be accessed by diving through a 15m deep cave. Sušac lighthouse, situated on top of a cliff on the southwestern part of the island, was built in 1878 on a directive by Austro-Hungarian emperor Franz Joseph.
