island Korcula

The island of Korcula has been inhabited since the Stone Age and as an evidence there are archaeological findings discovered in Vela Spila. In the 6th century BC, the Greeks settled the island and named it Korkyra Melaina (Black Korkyra), probably because of its dense pine forest. Today, the island of Korcula is an attractive tourist destination with a mild Mediterranean climate and rich cultural heritage. The coast has many coves and bays and is surrounded by islands of which some are even inhabited.

The southern side of the coast is steep and it has 20m high cliffs, while the north coast is less rugged and it is not safe for anchoring boats. Due to the currents and winds, Peljesac channel is extremely popular among wind surfers. Besides windsurfing, Korcula offers other sports activities on vacation; water skiing, surfing, diving and many others. Crystal clear water, unspoiled nature and beaches are ideal for relaxing and enjoying in the sun. The most famous beaches of the island are sandy beach in Lumbarda and pebbly beach in the town of Pupnat.

The town Korcula is the administrative center of the island and is widely known as "Little Dubrovnik". It is located on the peninsula and surrounded by walls and towers. Enjoy walking down the streets of the old town and visiting many churches, the Cathedral of St. Mark, Bishop's Treasury, the Town Museum, Renaissance palaces, the City Hall, Rector's Palace and many other attractions. One of the main attractions is the house of Marco Polo, the famous world traveler who was born in Korcula. The gastronomic offer of the island is rich in fish and local wines (Posip, Greek, Rukatac and Plavac Mali).

The town has preserved the traditional knight games such as the famous Moreska. It is performed every year in summer in memory of the Turkish attacks. The game involves two groups of warriors, dressed in white and black costumes which, with song and dance, fight for the girl. Other games are Kumpanija (it is performed in Pupnat, Cara, Smokvica, Blato and Vela Luka) and Mosta in Žrnovo. In addition to games of chivalry, you can also enjoy in a variety of musical events, wine festivals, sailing, ... The traditional fishing festivals are held where you can enjoy in local wine, freshly prepared fish dishes and Dalmatian songs.
