Ivan Dolac - island Hvar

Tourist destination info Ivan Dolac - island Hvar

Ivan Dolac is a village situated on the south side of island Hvar: 10 km from Jelsa, 20 km from Stari Grad and 38 km from the town of Hvar. A 1.5 km long tunel connects it to the rest of the island. Pebble beaches, including the famous Šuplja stina and Lučišće close to Sv.Nedjelje, Jagodna, Paklina and Petarčica make it a very attractive destination, especially for those who want a quiet vacation away from city crowds. You won’t find buses, hotels, large shopping malls and loud discos here and accommodation is mostly offered in private apartments. You can also hire a taxi boat which will take you on a tour of small islands located in front  of Hvar. In Ivan Dolac you will find a grocery store, several restaurants and everything else you may need can be found in the nearby town of Jelsa. On the slopes above the village Basina are numerous vineyards where the best wines of Hvar are made.

Jelsa, which is only 10 km away, is surrounded by the island’s two highest peaks, St. Nicholas to the West and Hum to the East. It is rich with various historical monuments located in it’s churches, fields, parks, squares and other places. Visit the church of St. Mary (early Gothic church which was expanded and fortified in 1535; today’s parish church), church of Our Lady of Good Health ( built in 1535, the protector of Jelsa and the surrounding towns from illness; residents gather on November 21st for a service), Lapidary (holds about twenty stone artifacts from the ancient and Medieval eras such as a tombstone from the roman era, a Venetian lion near the bell tower and others) and the park (one of the largest and most beautiful parks in Dalmatia which is home to the statues of Captain Niko Duboković and composer Antun Dobronić). It has a developed coastline with its islands, bays and capes where everyone can find a place for themselves to enjoy far away from the crowds. While in this beautiful town, do not miss the opportunity to visit Hvar, Split and Makarska.

Must see places:

Hvar is an ancient city with a rich history. The city faces the sunny South side of the world and has the most sunny days during the year. Its name comes from the island’s Greek name Pharos. Of the city’s historical monuments you can visit the fortress Fortica, the Hvar cathedral, theatre and Franciscan monastery. Hvar is the heart of Croatian island tourism and is one of the most visited destinations in the entire Adriatic. The main attractions of the city are: its warm, sunny climate, its various accommodation opportunities, sport and recreation, its natural beauty, a good gastronomic offer and the city’s active night life.

Stari Grad is the oldest city in Croatia. Greeks from the island Paros moved there in 384 BC and gave it the name Faros. It is located where a deep sea gulf meets the rich island soil. The old part of the city has been well maintained and is of great touristic value. The thousand year old history of this city has left numerous historical monuments such as the city walls of Faros, Roman mosaics, the early Christian church of St. John,  medieval street set, Tvrdalj (a Renaissance castle with gardens and pond), church of St. Peter and the Dominican monastery and many others. One of the best known beaches on the island is the city beach “Lanterna” located in Stari Grad.

Split is an eternally young city which lives in a slow pace that is very easy to get used to. The city is rich because of its turbulent history which is evident in its multitude of historical monuments.Take some time to learn about a small part of its history and visit Diocletian’s palace (the heart of the city), the Iron Gate, the statue of bishop Gregory of Nin, the cathedral of St. Duje, church of St. Francis, cathedral of St. Peter, the main court, St. Ante’s monastery and others.
