Rakalj

Tourist destination info Rakalj

Rakalj is a small town on the west bank of the Raša bay, located on the southeast coast of Istria, 12 km northeast of Marčane and 30 km from Pula. First mentioned in 1190th, Rakalj was once known for its traditional Istrian pottery, a tradition now revived for tourism purposes. It was also known for its skilled sailors and fishermen. Rakalj is also attractive to visitors due to its cultural and historical sights (the Baroque parish church built in the 18th century, the Rakalj castle ruins) as well as the ethnographic collection situated in the native home of scholar and writer Mijo Mirkovic (Mate Balota). Stari Rakalj (Old Rakalj), is located closer to the sea on a small hill along the Raška bay. Next to the ruins of the Old Rakalj is the church of St. Agnes from the year 1495. The location and its surroundings is rich in flora and fauna, and as such is suitable for rural tourism, hunting and hiking. Rakalj offers beautiful a countryside, the sea, the sun and the quiet away from the crowded seaside resorts. Many beautiful beaches (located 3 km away) are hidden from view, providing a sense of freedom and intimacy. You can enjoy the delicacies of the Istria region in the restaurant "Sveti Mikula”. While staying in Rakalj do not forget to visit other famous tourist destinations in Istria such as Pula, Rovinj, Umag and Poreč.

Pula is a city rich in history and cultural monuments. Visit the amphitheater  which dominates the city and is the 6th largest ancient amphitheater in the world, Augustus’ temple, triumphal arch of the Sergijans, the Forum, the gates of Hercules, church and monastery of St. Frances, castle, navy cemetery and many others. The city offers a wide variety of sports and recreational activities as well. You can take part in windsurfing, basketball, tennis, sailing, panoramic flights, nature climbing, golf, scuba diving, walking and cycling.

Rovinj is a small city located on the western coast of Istria. It is rich with historical landmarks, of which we recommend the following: Old Town, City Walls and Gates, Church of St. Euphemia, Baptistry of the Holy Trinity, Franciscan Monastery, the castle on the island of St. Andrew and Dvigrad. Apart from its historical landmarks, Rovinj is rich with natural beauty, as well. Be sure to visit sights such as Limska Draga, the Rovinj islands and coastal region, “Zlatni Rat” Forest Park, “Fantazija” quarry, “Palud” marsh and the Dvije Sestrice islands.

Umag is a city and port located on the northwestern coast of Istria. Many call it the city of tourism and sport because it has, for many years, hosted the ATP tennis tournament and it hosts many stars of world tennis.

Poreč is one of the more beautiful tourist destinations on the Istrian peninsula. The city is rich with historical monuments and natural beauty. Of its historical monuments we recommend you visit the North fortress, the Pentagonal fortress, canons, medieval city walls and the Euphrasian Basilica. Also take some time to view its natural beauty such as the Baredine, Mark’s and Pincinova caves, group of trees near the St. Anne church by Červar. Sport and recreation fans can enjoy activities such as scuba diving, jet-ski riding, fishing, sailing, water skiing, walking, biking, golf, hunting or paintball. Those who prefer extreme sports can experience mountain climbing or activities at the adrenalin park “Akros.”
