Biokovo is a protected nature park, that spreads across and area of 19,550 ha2 on Mount Biokovo. The position of the mountain alone is like a gain wall above the Makarska Riviera. This unique sea belt, features natural elements such as deep chasms, caves, abysses and forests of beech, Some of the caves are so deep, that even during the hot summer months, snow and ice can be found inside, which were used years ago as a store for sustaining food in the summer. For Tourist exploration of the mountain, we would like to single out the botanical garden, and the Biokovo road, that leads to the peak of the mountain Vošac and St. Jure, (engl. St. George). Recreation lovers can enjoy mountain bicycling, hiking, horseback riding, and many other activities, and for the especially adventurous paragliding.

The Botanical Garden is located just past the village Kotišina. (Accessible by car from Makarska from the road towards Vrgorac, turning left after the second kilometre, driving for another 1km. Accessible by hike on a marked trail from Makarska).

St. Jure (St. George) is the highest peak on Mount Biokovo reaching 1762m above sea level. The peak is accessible by car, which makes it especially attractive and easy to enjoy. The Peak was named after the small chapel built on the top, which was moved to a slightly lower location in 1964 when a telecommunication tower was built there. The St, George chapel was first mentioned in 1646, every year on the last Saturday of July there is a pilgrimage to the chapel. From the very top of the peak, a beautiful view arises of the Makarska Riviera, central Dalmatian islands and on very clear days, the tops of Italian mountains (Mount Gargano).

At a glance the park seems to leave the impression of being barren, however the reality is actually quite opposite. There are over 1500 plant species growing on Biokovo. The well known Biokovo bell (Edraianhtus pumilio), the uskolisna zečina (Centaurea cuspidata) and the Slava klisura (Centaurea gloriosa) all grow on the mountain. Mountain goats and uflons are two of the more interesting mammals and mountain birds such as the golden eagle habituate the mountain.

The park is located 6km from Makarska towards Vrgorac, where the Biokovo road takes you to the entrance to the park.

Ticket price for nature park Biokovo is 40 kn.
